Gen Con 2018 Day 1!
Helloooooo world! I just got back from the Ruins of Atlantis Masquerade Ball, which for me means that day one of GenCon is officially over. I remember when I was young and could stay up all night long without consequence… Tonight, I was so exhausted that walking the five blocks back to the hotel was out of the question, so I got a ride from my good friend Scott, who drives a Tan Toyota Prius, has a five-star rating and is always approximately 4 minutes away.
But before I hop in the shower then hop into bed, I wanted to write down a few of the highlights from day one!
The day started off with a lovely breakfast at First Watch, a gem hiding right across the street from the Hilton. I discovered a thing called Million Dollar Bacon, which costs five dollars. It is bacon with brown sugar, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for bacon, which was already in pretty good standing. Matt had an omelet with regular bacon. (sucker, ha ha!)
After that, we headed to the convention center, where much spending happened. We picked up Coimbra, Century Eastern Wonders, Reef, then 3 copies of Welcome To, 2 for the husband and I, and the other for SaltCON, a blue and black top hat styled after the boxiest spaceship of some dude with a British accent, all the Oink games we were missing, the new Prelude expansion for Terraforming Mars, the limited edition Prelude Pin, 2 copies of Spring Meadow, one for us the other for SaltCON, then three bottled waters because the exhibit hall is hella hot.
Then we worked at the Fowers Games booth, where I taught a lot of people how to play Hardback, Burgle Bros and sometimes Word Domination. And the highlight of working the booth was when AnnaMaria showed up out of the blue! I was demoing Hardback when suddenly she appeared out of thin air! Sort of. It sure seemed like it. She flew in from DC to come to GenCon for only a few hours to see me and other incredible women! Sooooooo awesome!
After the exhibit hall closed, we raced over to the Will Call line to pick up our tickets for the Ruins of Atlantis Masquerade Ball. The line was long, but the end of the line was still inside the convention center, so it really wasn’t too bad. I think it took less than an hour to get through.
By this time, Matt and I were hungry again, so we headed back to the hotel to drop off our purchases and go find some dinner. As it turns out, it was somehow already much later than we thought, so dinner was served in the form of beef jerky and pistachios and a Larabar. We didn’t want to be late for the Masquerade, after all.
The Masquerade was a lot of fun! Thank you to Greater Than Games, Geek & Sundry, Nerdist and Alpha for putting on the event. Meeting and spend time with so many World of Women… women, Kay, Jennifer, Nikki, Amy, Adrienne, Kathleen, Mandi, Bebo, and then Jaime for a bit as well. It was wonderful! My favorite part of the day was when everyone sang along to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Practically everyone in attendance was singing along, dancing and being super animated. The love for this song and the emotions it conveys are timeless. There were also so many incredible costumes. It was fantastic!
I’m excited for day two! We’ll be visiting the Chip Theory booth to top off our Too Many Bones collection. We’ll stop by and pick up our pre-orders for Detective and Ice Cool 2, and possibly a few others I’m forgetting.
So… until tomorrow interwebs, thanks for reading!
